Favourite Subjects

Looking around all of our photoblogs throws up a massive range of subject material and a variety of treatments thereof. Yesterday we discussed taboo subjects, or subjects we have difficulty with. This made me think about what I look for as a subject in a picture I shoot.

  • Colour
  • Odd/unique angle
  • Theme
  • Challenge

Above all I look for colour in my subjects and then I try to make a close crop or an unusual view. Most of my subjects are inanimate though I occasionally take animals. Looking through my thumbnails, I see no real pattern overall in my subject matter. I guess my work is characterised in the findingof a new take on a common theme.

What subjects do you most like to take?

I try to find interesting angle for a generally plain subject, which means I try to climb up on something and look down or get below eye level to look up at things. And I love lines and shape and often silhouettes. That’s one of the reasons, I enjoy your photos and themes so much. :)

I am trying to shoot pictures that rise “emotions”. Pain, fear, joy, love, hardship, luck, sadness, anger, etc.

I also like to shoot “the faces/portraits” of people. You can see so much in the face/expressions of someone. Everybody is so unique that I like to “collect” those different personalities

I think it would be obvious to even the casual observer visiting me that my main theme is Nature. One way or the other I always seem to gravitate towards something growing or living and yes, colour does play a big part too. The things I avoid are black and white and portrait/people, I just don’t feel in interested in one and am still uncomfortable in taking the other.

Night shots are my favorites and especially portraits of the people that I talk with late at night or very early in the morning. I find that most people are still very open to getting their photograph taken, but unfortunately I’m finding it harder to get photo releases so I don’t get to post very often.

I like to take things that are technically challenging. I don’t know why, but it makes me feel good when I manage to pull it off. So I end up taking stuff that’s usually at either end of the focal length scale - miles away or almost touching the lens.

Foremost, my favorite subjects are people but I don’t load my site up with people because it would just end up being my daughters and I’d bore everybody.

Second is nature; nature in my microcosm specifically - whatever grows in the area around my house / greenhouse. I love Alaska, but I am crappy at capturing the essence of the beauty compard to several other local photographers. I sort of push myself to TRY to capture the landscapes, but I do not think I do it any justice.

I guess I must br a generalist :) I’m always trying to shoot something I haven’t done before. I love macro, though my current camera setup isn’t ideal for it. I try to look for interesting angles on an otherwise mundane scene as well. A splash of color is always interesting.

I also enjoy underwater photography–big and tiny creatures–though I haven’t been able to do it in over a year.

But being unrealistic and I had another “dream job” it would be photo journalism. Telling a story through pictures. For example: the aftermath of Katrina.

I guess its no real surprise when I say my favorite subjects are reflections and street scenes. Street scenes including candids and decay.

i love intersting angle…but i think my art sense doesnt did a good job…

but i love scenery with gorgeous sky, clouds

    and fence on rolling hills

    and long,winding narrow road…
just the road winding its way around the field, farms, city

I’ll try my hand at anything, but I particularly like motor sports and landscapes; with landscapes I prefer early morning or night shots. I also like to take, what I would call, lifestyle portraits that go beyond head and shoulder type shots to include more detail about an individual no matter how subtle.

i don’t think i have a favourite subject at the moment. i tend to try and take images of simple everyday subjects and create an interesting image, that’s about it. i guess i still feel i am in that learning stage and perhaps a specialism will emerge in time.

i would like to get more into street photography and have had some wonderful support from some fellow bloggers… still working on it!

    emma :)
