Photoblogging Heroes

Anna Aspenes paid me a stunning compliment - here - where she compared me to two photobloggers whose work I really admire, namely Rock Kauser and David Kapp.

This got me to thinking who in the group has most impact on me, not necessarily just the best photographers, but those who provoke with comments or show a willingness to experiment. For me my list is heavily weighted toward good photography since I am always looking to stretch myself and the following inspire me.

  • Rock Kauser
fabulous photographs with a wide variety of styles and subjects and a consistent and thought provoking commenter.
  • David Kapp
awesome images, particularly the reflected windows and the street images. Respect for the recent decision to eschew digital for now in deference to film in order to rekindle creativity.
  • Lara Barrett
the person whose work finally persuaded me to do the blog thingy - always interesting and fresh - a shame she has taken a sabbatical right now, I hope we do not lose her.
  • Paul Wood
stunning photographs - despite that willing to help us lesser mortals out.
  • Sidney Snoeck
photographer and poster of candid portraits and other people shots which is exactly the type of photogrpahy I have thus far failed to produce.

The list is not ordered and it is somewhat invidious to generate such a list because I have been inspired on separate occasions by most whom I visit. This ranking also moves around a little over time.

Back in July 2005 I had a guest week when I was out of internet range prior to moving to this site when I did not have the possibiliy of pre-publishing. The photogrpahers were:

Who are your photoblogging heroes and why? Please limit yourself to your top five (yes I know I cheated by mentioning two more, but then it is my blog). It would also be great if you were a little more creative than me with your criteria :-o

Thanks for visiting and commenting.

My heros in no particular order

    1. Kendall at Invisible Threads - he’s the kindest guy I’ve met in the photoblogging world and always answers my stupid ass questions - honestly he’s always helpful. Plus, his work is something that I don’t shoot - so I look at it differently - I learned to see ROT/RUST/DEAD BUILDING by looking at his work.

    2. Jen at Photojenic - her stuff is simple and always beautiful - even the simplest rock with water looks amazing when she takes a photo of it.

    3. Alex at Shutter and Pupil - metioned in the last post. He’s been THE MOST helpful of anybody with D70 stuff. He’s great!

    4. Anand at Obelix - also mentioned in the last post - the most helpful for books and technical camera/computer stuff

    5. Tomo at Photomo - really, I just love his weird photoblog (it’s dinky) and he shoots film, which I find intriguing. Well, he shoots with about 20 cameras, but most seem to be film.

This list could go on and on, and Lara Barrett is in there, too. I hope she comes back! I’m going to meet her next month :)

  2. Rock Says:

Travis Ruse at Express Train -Incredible shots of commuting in NYC.

John Washington at Shots - Photography with a strong sense of graphic design.

Susan Burnstine at outafocus - Experiments with toy and made cameras.

David J. Nightingale at Chromasia - Superb processing with Photoshop.

Jacqueline at Strangekindofwoman - Photographs of her legs, stockings and footwear.

Ian, each of these photographers does something unique with thier photography.

Travis and Jacqueling with thier dedication to a single subject. Can you imagine trying to constantly make the same subject new and exciting. This is especially true for Jacqueline.

John brings the eye of a graphic designer to every shot. His attention to composition is amazing.

Susan’s work always intriques me. I’ve spent my life as a photographer buying the best equipment I can afford and she shoots spectacular shots with toys.

DJN is the master of a style of Photoshop Proscessing that I call Chromazing. I see people all over trying to copy his style, which is ridiculous because it is his alone.

Of course you make the rules and I am only supposed to mention five, but there are several others that I place in this same group of elites.

    David Kapp at Analog Life

    Alec at Shutter And Pupil

    Water Molotov at jbuhler.com

    Valerie Cochran at Your Waitress

Ian at —- you already know your url!

Yes, I know I cheated, but I did only put five at the top :)

  3. ian Says:

It is interesting that there are differences in the lists - some of these names are new to me, I need to check them out.

Rock - I guessed that most people (like me) would want to put more than five names :-)

Looking forward to lists from others.

  4. Jen Says:

I’ve found some new favorites on my rounds. Since several of my “old” favorites have already been mentioned, here are the newest additions:

Paul at Moments in Time Paul’s some GREAT photos of Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, and of the community coming together to put life back in order.

    Michael at Learning to See

    Scott at Stray Matter

    Rachel at Shiny Green Apple

Kay at Fourteen Places to Eat.

  5. Obelix Says:

It is tough to name five, but I would simply name the one guy who got me into blogging. Dave Kapp. I have been amazed by this dude.

I don’t know what I am disappointed with him most, his not doing landscapes any more or giving up digital, can’t believe I am saying this here, but you should check out his landscape photos. I hope that he gets back to shooting landscapes with a digital SLR some time soon.

Dave, I hope you are reading this :D

  6. Obelix Says:

Well, I re-read my comment. I meant to say “It is tough to name *only* five” :D .

  7. Kim Says:

    Here are my five:

Rock: Rock has helped so much personally and has to be the most helpful photoblogger out there. I am learning so much from him!

Chromasia: DJN has transformed my preference for soft pictures to clarity and sharpness. His techniques for his children is so unique too.

Morven: Ian, I’ve been following your blog for a long time and I’ve loved your series on patterns, flowers, and the other themes. My favorite one of your shots will always be Platform 9 3/4!

Durham Township: Kathleen is in inspiration because she does most of her shots within a short radius of her house. We all have an unlimited possibility of shots all around us… she reminds me of that. I do love her soft look too.

Eyefultower: I don’t know how I stumbled onto this blog. There aren’t a lot of shots here but I have found inspiration here a number of times.

And of course Lara Barrett has made me think of ordinary objects in a creative manner.

Thank you Ian for this site, it has been enjoyable!

  8. Sidney Says:

Ian, thank you so much to put me on your list. I am happy you like my work. Alas I don’t think I really deserve to be mentioned on any list.

I will now give you my list of five people whose photography I like. Of course, there are many more I would like to mention. In my list I didn’t include any regular visitor of my blog nor the blogs of people I visit almost daily. (Dave Kapp, Rock, Ian, etc.). I did this on purpose since the fact that I visit them daily is proof enough that I like what they do.

    Boogie at Artcoup

    Dave at Dave’s Macroblog

    David at Chromasia

    Travis at Express Train

    Wen at Ziboy

  9. Sidney Says:

My links are still not working.
I think I did an error in the code. Only Chromeasia link is working.
Sorry about that. I don’t know if you can still fix it.

  10. ian Says:

    Sidney - two things

    1. Links are now fixed - sorry I did not understand what you meant.

    2. You really do need to believe me and others when we say we like your work - indeed I would not have asked you to post on my blog if I did not admire your work.

    Ian :-)

  11. pilgrim Says:

Hi, Ian. I’m late (as usual) to join the thread, but I will list my “heroes” anyway. My approach to make the short five list is not to include the well known, well established masters as Dave from Chromasia or Kathleen from Durham Township (though I love her work). Nor I include some blogs that I really enjoy visiting because they are fun (as GN’s FloridaNorthCoast) or original (as Poramit’s Outdoorexposure). I’ll focus on photographic quality and overall pleasing design:
    great landscape and nature photos:
    www.ryanrahn.com
    www.twentyfives.com
great abstract approach and “that unique look”:
    www.rskphotography.com/photoblog/
    www.morvenphoto.co.uk (is NOT flattery)
    outstanding street portraits: www.whatthehellhappenedlastnight.com/photos/
I think every selection is unfair to some other great photographers out there, but that’s the best I can do…

  12. ian Says:

Pilgrim - thank you for including me.

I agree that there are a lot of great people and photographers out there - one of the problems is the time needed to keep up with them all!

  13. pilgrim Says:

I see that Btezra’s site, “what the hell happened last night” isn’t working. I’ve done a search in photoblogs.org but he hasn’t changed the URL, maybe is temporarily offline. His portraits done on Pittburgh’s streets are outstanding. Maybe I admire him because I’m too shy to portray people on the streets…

  14. David Kapp Says:

Wow. I’m honored to make your list, and the list of others. I’d say this would be a hard decision for me to make. I follow a lot of photoblogs…I mean a lot. I currently have over 150 photoblogs in my RSS reader, and I enjoy them all everyday. I may not comment on the majority, but they all have a unique style that I admire.

If pushed to make a choice of my top 5, I couldn’t do it. There are just too many good ones out there. Many of the blogs already listed here are among my favorites, so I will not list them again.

  15. ian Says:

David - I am not sure you realise how good your stuff is!

  16. Halo Says:
